The contract is a major win for Jade Logistics, and its first in SE Asia. “PT Pelabuhan Indonesia I (Pelindo I) has selected the terminal operating system (TOS), Master Terminal, from Jade Logistics, to manage their mixed cargo operations at 14 terminals in the provinces of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (Aceh), Sumatera Utara (North Sumatra), Riau, and Riau Islands (Kepulauan Riau). Master Terminal will replace Pelindo I’s legacy systems and will help modernize and optimize their terminal operations,” Jade stated.

The roll out will take place in stages over an 18-month period. The first three terminals in the process of implementing Master Terminal are at the ports of Dumai, Sibolga, and Malahayati, and are set to go live by the third quarter of 2018, with the remaining terminals live by mid 2019.

With a large number of multi purpose terminals, Indonesia is a good fit for Jade’s multi-cargo TOS, which will support the 14 different terminals from a single instance of Master Terminal. After Jade Logistics was spun out from Jade Software Corporation (JSC) last year the company, led by CEO David Lindsay, has pursued an aggressive growth strategy that includes pushing into new markets. Before winning this contract it set up an office in Jakarta.

Commenting on winning the contract with Pelindo I, Jade said: “In support of the Indonesian Government’s Maritime port infrastructure upgrade program, dubbed the Indonesian-sea-toll-road program, Pelindo I (one of four Indonesian state-owned port operators) sought an integrated TOS that supported multiple cargo types and facilities to grow alongside the business. Master Terminal was a clear frontrunner, with a proven track record of handling a mixture of break-bulk, bulk, container and Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) cargo. Key functionality such as the ability to integrate with the Government Customs system, InaPortNet, and an SAP finance system, were features that won Pelindo I over”.

Pelindo I has a vision is to become the leading Port Business in Indonesia. “Investing in state-of-the- art technology, such as the Master Terminal application, supplemented with improved operational processes, training, and equipment, will ensure Pelindo I is in a position to handle current and future cargo volumes more efficiently and more cost-effectively,” Jade added.

“We are thrilled to partner with Pelindo I on this project,” remarked Lindsay. “The opportunities for them in this region are immense and we’re looking forward to seeing their coastal hubs, industry and economy grow. We’re excited to play a part in Indonesia’s greater expansion plans and seeing what the future holds.”

Master Terminal goes live at first port in Pakistan

Published by WorldCargo News April 12, 2018

Jade Logistics’ terminal operating system (TOS), Master Terminal, has successfully gone live at Pakistan International Bulk Terminal Ltd (PIBTL).

Demonstrating its true “mixed cargo” credentials, PIBTL has implemented Master Terminal for managing its coal, cement and clinker terminal at Port Qasim. PIBTL has invested some US$285M developing the facility, which is touted as the first and only common user dry bulk facility in Pakistan, capable of handling 12 Mtpa of coal, with an average discharge rate of over 30,000 tons per day.

“PIBTL’s vision is to transform the port infrastructure through investment in the latest technologies, such as Master Terminal, and the best global standards for handling cargo. Its goal is to strive for excellence, and to build world-class port infrastructure in the country”, stated Sharique Azim Siddiqui, CEO of PIBTL.

Jade Logistics has long promoted Master Terminal as a true mixed cargo capable TOS, and PIBTL said it this was a factor in picking the software for its new facility.

“We identified Master Terminal as the leading TOS in the mixed cargo market. We will use it to optimize workflows across our operation,” said Sharique Azim Siddiqui. “Master Terminal’s comprehensive EDI capabilities, ability to interface to other systems, and sound implementation reputation gave us the confidence that it would more than meet the needs of our busy port.”

PIBTL has also implemented Jade Logistics’ Harbor Management software for berth scheduling and management of its harbor operations.

Salman Zulfikar, Senior Consulting Manager for Jade Logistics commented, “Entry into the South Asia market further enhances Master Terminal’s reputation as the world’s number one TOS for mixed cargo ports. The project was well supported by the PIBTL management, as well as the operations, finance and IT users. A combination of state-of-the-art bulk-only technologies, and the integration of Master Terminal with core weighing processes, were key to a successful implementation.”

Mobile Apps in action at CICE in Mexico

Jade Logistics recently released a suite of web-based mobile apps. The apps were put through rigorous testing by our customers, including CICE, a mixed cargo port in Mexico who have now implemented them across their operation.

We recently caught up with CICE to see how the apps are performing on their terminals.

Jade plays host

Jade Logistics has implemented the first SaaS application of its Master Terminal terminal operating system (TOS) running on the cloud using Amazon Web Services (AWS). The system is operating at the Port of Everett in Washington State, a longstanding customer of Jade.

Speaking with WorldCargo News, Kaustubh Dalvi, Jade Logistics’ president of global sales, said he believes the time is right for terminals, particularly smaller facilities, to embrace SaaS for TOS delivery. “There can be a 40% reduction in cost – there is no two ways about it,” he said in an interview. Most of this is generated from savings in purchasing and supporting hardware.

A hosted TOS is certainly not a new concept, but WorldCargo News has noted several times that terminals have been reluctant to embrace the concept. Dalvi said one of the reasons it made sense for Everett was that Jade was already managing the TOS for the port onsite, including performing upgrades.“They have been comfortable with us for many years,” said Dalvi. While AWS will host the software on its servers, Jade will still manage the TOS fully for Everett.

Jade is now putting forward the SaaS option for customers to consider, but Dalvi stressed that they have to be comfortable with the concept, and some facilities want to see it proven elsewhere first.TOS applications, he added, are actually quite demanding in terms of their transactional load.

Another big concern is that putting software on the cloud leaves the terminal vulnerable to an interruption in internet service. Dalvi said this is a very real concern, with ports often at the edge of infrastructure networks, in areas where there is regular construction and redevelopment. The contractor that makes a mistake with a backhoe and cuts service, he added, is not just a hypothetical situation – real terminals have actually encountered this problem.

Redundancy is important, and how this is managed depends on the particular terminal, and its ability to access redundant connections. Dalvi noted that backup options can include cellular networks to send data, something Jade has experience with, as some of its customers use cellular services, rather than WiFi, to send information to the TOS at the terminal.

Depending on the size of the terminal, one option might be a hybrid system, where some aspects of the TOS are hosted locally to allow it to keep running in the event of a disruption.

Intermodal port unites with Master Terminal to grow

Over the past twenty years Jade has worked closely with CentrePort to deliver a solution that has continually evolved to meet the port’s individual needs. This partnership has in turn given CentrePort a sturdy foundation for growth.

New Zealand’s steady trans-Pacific trade makes the harbour-side capital city of Wellington the ideal location for an international shipping port. CentrePort is an intermodal hub with excellent accessibility to the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean, and the only port in New Zealand with 24 hour delivery options.

Annually, CentrePort handles approximately 135,000 TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units) of containers. Major cargoes handled are forestry products (logs, veneer, and pulp), petrol and chemicals, cement, wheat, fruit, soda ash and vehicles.

As a mixed cargo port, CentrePort has partnered with Jade for almost twenty years. Jade’s innovative software solution, Master Terminal, manages special cargo and high volumes of TEUs cost-effectively, allowing CentrePort to incrementally increase revenue and deliver more value to their customers.

Salerno Container Terminal selects Jade’s Master Terminal

Jade Software has continued to build on its strong start to 2016 with Italian port operator Salerno Container Terminal (SCT) selecting Jade Logistics’ Master Terminal to run its Italian operation. Master Terminal, Jade’s flagship Terminal Operating System (TOS), will replace SCT’s legacy system which is gradually being phased out of the market.

The win enhances Jade’s growing reputation as the leader in the mixed cargo terminal market and further extends its footprint in Europe.

Based in southern Italy, and covering an area of 120,000 sq. meters, SCT has been developed as a major private container terminal to cope with the increasing shipping demands in the area. Handling approximately 400,000 TEUs per annum, and with increasing volumes of roll-on-roll-off cargo, SCT serves the area from Rome to Bari, Naples and Salerno, via direct links with the Italian highway and railway networks.

Jade Logistics CEO, David Lindsay, says: “Jade has a strong connection with the Italian market and we are thrilled about building this new relationship with SCT. Between our Rotterdam office, newly opened development center in Geneva, and our New Zealand based team, we are fully committed to supporting SCT throughout this project and beyond, as well as supporting further growth in Europe.”

SCT required a system that would provide a seamless transition from its legacy TOS, while at the same delivering a solution that was flexible enough to adapt to SCT’s future growth aspirations.

Massimiliano Riccardi, Commercial Director at SCT said: “After a comprehensive evaluation process Master Terminal was the only system that offered all the functionality and flexibility required to not only replace our legacy system, but also support the future needs of our business.

“Jade’s experience in the container and project cargo market, combined with their impressive implementation capability, gave us the confidence we needed to ensure a successful transition project and a sound platform for growth.” said Mr Riccardi.

Kaustubh Dalvi, Jade Logistics’ President of Global Sales said it was exciting to work with SCT who had a good vision of what they needed from their new TOS, both now and into the future.

“Our sound technical solution, best in industry implementation approach, and record of delivering product changes to meet each customer’s needs, means we are well placed to help SCT make the transition to Master Terminal as seamless as possible.

“We have developed some smart migration tools which will allow for out of the box data migration, causing minimal disruption to users’ business and positioning them well for future success,” said Mr Dalvi.

This is the sixth new business win for Jade Master Terminal this calendar year. Implementation at Salerno will commence in 2016 and is expected to take less than six months.

World Cargo News talk to Jade’s Kaustubh Dalvi about the recent installation of Master Terminal at Abu Dhabi Ports

Jade Logistics has successfully gone live with its terminal operating system (TOS), Master Terminal, at three of seven sites for Abu Dhabi Ports  (ADP).

ADP is replacing legacy systems with Master Terminal for its mixed cargo operations. The first site to go live was Zayed port in July, after a six-month implementation phase. It was followed by Khalifa (1 August) and Musaffah (6 September). The remaining four terminals are expected to go live in 2016.

Speaking with World Cargo News, Jade’s director of business development, Captain Kaustubh Dalvi, said the changeover to Master Terminal is a comprehensive undertaking, with Jade installing a new server family within ADP’s existing infrastructure.

Dalvi said a common challenge at general cargo terminals is the lack of standardisation of data that can be exchanged electronically. “This limits the port community to take full advantage of the pre-advising and pre-planning functionality, which is available in our TOS,” he said. However, ADP is a forward-thinking organisation in this respect, and will use EDI for general cargo, which is something not all terminals in the general cargo business do. Port agents were trained to supply manifests, load and discharge information in standardised format. “As a result, cargo is now electronically declared 24 hours in advance of arrival using EDI,” said Dalvi.

The ADP project includes a suite of Master Terminal mobile applications and a web portal. The portal will allow stakeholders to access information using cargo queries and self-service reporting, and/or register pre-notifications, truck appointments request for services, etc.

Master Terminal has a multi-terminal architecture, and all the terminals will be hosted at a single physical location. The transition to Jade will be managed by running the new software in parallel with legacy systems at each terminal’s go-live. “We typically commence the parallel run a couple of weeks prior to the actual go-live, to minimise downtime and potential disruption,” said Dalvi. He also emphasised the importance of ADP’s project team and super users in ensuring a successful go-live, particularly in avoiding bottlenecks, as the team brings seven terminals live with the new TOS. The remaining four facilities are expected to go live in 2016.

Innovation underpins growth at Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa Port

Introduction of Master Terminal TOS has assisted with a 36.8% increase in volumes handled in the first half of this year.

Through continuous commitment to innovation, Abu Dhabi Ports has grown exponentially in trade volumes – with H1 of 2015 already posting significant growth in cargo volumes on H1, 2014. The Khalifa Port Container Terminal, which is operated by Abu Dhabi Terminals, has seen a 36.8% increase in volumes handled in the first half of this year. The number of TEU has increased year-on-year from 460,277 in H1 of 2014 to 629,941 in the same period in 2015.

Master Terminal has enabled real-time management and control of all aspects of general cargo operations, including bulk, break bulk, Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) and project cargo which have also seen a considerable increase in volumes.
